Update and new Tip of the Day!

So I have been using my homemade dishwasher detergent and wanted to update how it has been working! It cleans the dishes great, but the Lemishine has caused it to cake, which means I am chiseling dishsoap everytime I run my dishwasher. So I may rework the ingredients and remove the Lemishine and see how it works. I was using that new Oxiclean power booster stuff, but you go through it FAST if you use it every wash. So when it ran out I refilled the bottle with white distilled vinegar....and I think it works better! (Not to mention cheaper!) I will update once I rework the detergent, and hopefully there will be no more chiseling!

Thanks to Danielle at Blissfulanddomestic.com I have learned that you can freeze MILK! Whole gallons of milk. Yep, you read that right! Those indents on the side of the milk expand and pop out as milk freezes. Pretty neat huh. So if you have a chest freezer you can buy the milk when it goes on sale and keep it all month long! It takes a day or 2 to thaw enough to use, but I'd rather that than pay the $3 it goes up to here sometimes! DIY Coffee Creamer!

Love homemade coffee creamer? Hate not being able to pronounce some of the ingredients on the label? Hate spending an arm and a leg on all natural coffee creamer??? Check out several ways I have discovered to make your own!

#1
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1-2 cups milk (skim,2%,whole...whatever!)
1 1/2 tbsp Vanilla extract

Pour all ingredients into a jar or container and SHAKE! Thats it! It tastes great but sometimes it's a little hard to get it really well mixed...So I tried the next recipe!

#2
3/4 cup dry milk
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup hot water
1-2 cups milk (any kind you like)
1 1/2 tbsp Vanilla Extract

Combine dry milk, sugar and hot water in a jar. Shake until combined. Once cooled add milk and vanilla. Shake again and thats it! It was ok...I would probably try it again will less sugar because it was SUPER sweet. The last thing I tried was....

#3
4 cups Half and Half
1/3 cup sugar
1 tbsp Vanilla
1tsp almond

Warm up 1 cup of half and half with sugar until melted, you can do this on the stove or in the microwave. Once sugar is melted add flavorings and let cool slightly. Pour remaining 3 cups of half and  half into mixture and combine. Best part of this recipe? Pour your liquid BACK into the half and half container. Thats it and its FABULOUS! I think #3 is my FAVORITE one so far. I like it best because you don't have to find a new container to put your mix in and you can buy 2 half and halfs and create 2 different flavor combos! I think next I may try a chocolate almond for myself!

Homemade dishwasher detergent

I detest housework. Even more than housework, I detest spending money on things to DO housework. Today's DIY was dish detergent. I've seen a few recipes on line and decided on this one:http://www.diynatural.com/homemade-dishwasher-detergent-soap/ I doubled the recipe and used Lemishine instead of citric acid. I also used that new Oxyclean Booster and added vinegar in the rinse. We have a very old washer and hard water.

Result: AMAZING! I was afraid my kitchen would turn into that episode of the Brady bunch with all the bubbles...but it works great! And my dishwasher doesn't have a funky smell that it has sometimes after use. I give it 5 stars!

Recipe for homemade dishwasher detergent:
2 cups Borax
2 cups Washing Soda
1 12oz container Lemishine
1 cup Kosher salt

Directions: 1tbsp per load! Thats it! Because there aren't any fillers you don't need nearly as much for the same amount of clean! Don't forget to use vinegar as a rinse aid!

Tip of the Day!

Who loves eating natural peanut butter??? Who hates CONSTANTLY stirring the jar?????? Here's a tip.....try storing the jar upside down in your refrigerator. That way the oil is less likely to seperate from the rest of the peanut butter!
Thanks to being a stay at home mom and the invention of Pinterest (and the fact that I LOVE saving money) I decided to start a blog about my adventures in doing things from scratch. I'm also going to post tips and tricks of things I've picked up on a day to day basis to help others save time (and that precious money)! So to all who read I hope you enjoy and find it useful!
